About the event

For years, attorney and historian Ken Cannon has captivated Alta Club members with his cemetery tours. Now, for the first time, Preservation Utah is proud to host one of his public tours.

This special walk will highlight the graves of 14 pioneering women elected to the Utah State Legislature between 1896—when Utah achieved statehood—and 1920, when the 19th Amendment granted women the right to vote nationwide. The tour will also explore the remarkable political climate of 1916, a year when no Republicans were elected to state or federal office, and Utahns chose their first Democratic and Jewish governor, Simon Bamberger—whose gravesite is among the stops.

The final portion of the tour will step beyond the cemetery gates and into the surrounding neighborhood, where Ken and his wife, writer Ann Edwards Cannon, live in a beautifully preserved Victorian home. Here, Ken will share insights into the area’s historic architecture.
