What Did the Building Look Like Originally?
Visual records help document a building’s original appearance and track physical changes over time
County Assessors
Some assessor records include photographs taken when a building was completed or shortly thereafter. It is important to note that some images were taken well after construction and may reflect later modifications. For counties without online tools, contact the assessor directly. Having detailed property information, such as a parcel number, will facilitate the search.
Counties with online searches include: Cache, Carbon, Davis, Kane, Morgan, Salt Lake, Summit, Tooele, Uintah, Utah, Washington, and Weber.
Historic Photographs
While photographs of a specific building may not exist, images of the surrounding street or neighborhood can provide valuable context. Searching by occupants' names may also yield results.
Digital Collections (Higher Education)
Utah colleges and universities maintain extensive digital collections that may include photographs, drawings, or documents:
General Local Sources
Local libraries, historical societies, and museums—including Daughters of the Utah Pioneers museums—often maintain collections of historic photographs and documents.
