Welcome
to the Preservation Utah
Archives
Nearly sixty years of work has left behind an extensive documentary record, and this archive represents the first time these records have been inventoried and made available to the public.

The archives are made up of three collections. The Preservation Utah Records include the organization's preservation projects, advocacy work, Heritage Awards, Homes Tours, events, and research. The Memorial House and Memory Grove Records focus on the history, restoration, and care of these historic properties. The Education Records highlight the education and reference work done over many years.
You will find correspondence, photographs, proposals, floor plans, newspaper clippings, and project files documenting the history of historic buildings, districts, and landscapes in communities across nearly every county of Utah, from tabernacles and theaters to schoolhouses, storefronts, and family homes. From the 1960s to the present day, they form a record of historic preservation in the state and tell the stories of the people and places that shaped Utah.

Because this is our first time organizing the collection, our electronic records are incomplete. Details like dates, locations, or counties are sometimes missing, which is understandable in a collection gathered and stored over nearly sixty years by many people. We see these gaps as an invitation. When you visit the collection by appointment, you can help us fill them in: researchers who examine the physical records can often supply the dates, places, and details our inventory is missing. Every visit and every contribution strengthens the archive, and what is incomplete today could be complete tomorrow with your help.

The collection is available to view by appointment, generally Monday through Friday, between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. Appointments run about an hour. Please contact us at least one week in advance at (801) 533-0858 or by email at info@preservationutah.org, and let us know which records or topics you'd like to see. A week's notice allows us to coordinate staff so that someone is on-site to assist you, and to pull the record or records you're looking for before you arrive.

You are welcome to take photographs of the records during your visit. Photocopying is not available. Please handle all materials with care, as many are fragile and irreplaceable.
