Japantown: What Is Lost, What Remains

Inspired by the short documentary Japantown: What Is Lost, What Remains by filmmaker Kelyn Ikegami, this event brings the community together for an evening of art, food, film, and conversation. The film follows Salt Lake City native Paul Iwasaki as he reflects on growing up in the city’s once vibrant Japantown and the lasting impact of its destruction.

The evening opens with a welcoming reception and art gallery from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., offering space to gather and connect before the program begins. At 6:30 p.m., the film screening and conversation with the filmmakers opens to the public, with discussion centered on memory, cultural preservation, and community voice. Thanks to a generous grant from Firelight Media and the Salt Lake City Arts Council, this event is hosted in partnership with Utah Japantown Advocates and The Plains.
