Exchange Place Tour

Why are these buildings here? As we make our way along Market Street and Exchange Place, we’ll discuss the evolution of the south end of downtown Salt Lake City. This 90-minute tour focuses on the vision of three early 20th-century entrepreneurs (Samuel Newhouse, O.J. Salisbury, and John Daly) and how buildings designed by important Los Angeles, St. Louis, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and Salt Lake City architects made this an impressive financial district.

We will explore how Exchange Place reflects some of the many ways downtown Salt Lake City has grown and changed over 100 years. Together we’ll consider the district’s origins, its heyday as a center for intermountain West finances, and how commerce and nightlife sustain it today.
