Join us in celebrating Utah Archives Month 2026 by learning from a professional archivist how to use primary sources to research SLC's history, get a behind-the-scenes tour of the State Archives, and receive hands-on transcription and indexing training!

Join the Utah State Archives and Preservation Utah for a special after-hours evening exploring Salt Lake City’s history through primary sources as part of Utah Archives Month 2026. Learn from archival experts, go behind the scenes with a special tour of the Archives, and get hands-on experience researching historic records.
Local Government Archivist Alan Barnett will introduce participants to researching historic buildings and the history of Salt Lake City’s changing streets and addresses. He will introduce you to the Salt Lake City Building Permit Registers and demonstrate how archivists use and index such primary source records.
Then it’s your turn to put those skills into practice. Participants will receive training on how to transcribe and index the Salt Lake City Building Permits, 1889–1897, helping make these historic records more accessible to researchers.
